Ход урока

I. Организационный момент

1. Thinking over the plan of this lesson I wanted Grieg’s music to impress you. But then I understood that this lesson shouldn’t be only about music. It should be about love. Love between a young boy and young girl, love to parents and to children, love to Motherland.

Nothing beautiful could be done without love. I’m sure of it. And our love-story has an epigraph. I know you can translate it into Russian.  “Among enjoyments of our life music yields to love only. But love is a melody too.” A.S. Pushkin.

«Из наслаждений жизни одной любви музыка уступает. Но и любовьмелодия».

Now I want you to listen to our famous bard Yuri Vizbor. Listen to his song and say what word has been missed here: Edvard Grieg’s _________ songs.

T. What word has been missed?

P.  light

T. Yes, it’s true. Write it please!

2. We are going to use the works painted by Konstantin Vasiljev – our talented, original artist.

May be it sounds strange and unexpectedly, but Vasiljev was listening to Grieg’s beautiful music while painting his pictures.

II. Основная часть урока

If we want to understand Grieg’s music we have to get to know his life.

P. I’d like to begin speaking.

Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen on the 15th of June in 1843. Bergen is in Norway. He grew up in a successful merchant family together with his brother John and three sisters. Very early he showed a strong interest in music and for the piano as an instrument. He could sit at the piano for hours, exploring all kinds of tunes of his own.

P2. I can add that Edvard Grieg was so lucky to have the best piano teacher in Bergen as his mother Gesine Hagerup had studied at the music conservatory in Hamburg in Germany, an education  that usually was offered only to men. His mother led Edvard forward into the wonder of music. His love for music grew and grew.

P3. When Edvard was ten as a member of highly respected family in Bergen he became a pupil at Tank’s school.  But Ed wasn’t the most disciplined pupil. He preferred to discover the music himself. Instead of the compulsory etudes he preferred to improvise and play finding new tunes and melodies. His real interest lay in music.

T. From his childhood Edvard Grieg had a rich imagination. He imagined his mother to be a “fairy-tale-lady”. And three huge rocks seemed to him beautiful young girls. Nature was alive. He saw it alive. He loved Norway very much. Edvard often told his father about his country and its wonderful nature. Who can live among rocks, fiords and mountains? Only courageous people. I think everybody knows about Vikings, brave sailors who lived  in a very severe climate in Norway. They could overcome all adversities. Tell me please, what places do you usually recollect thinking about your Motherland?

P1. As for me I recollect Bratsk and one of the most beautiful rivers in the world the Angara. It’s water is the purest water on our planet.

P2. I can’t help admiring the forest in__________. It’s pines are so high and wonderful.

P3. I cant forget  picturesque lanes with old trees in Lipki. We used to walk there . Unfortunately there are no lanes there now.

P4. I often think about Nizhnevartovsk. Its winters are unforgettable. They like fairy-tales. I close my eyes and see taiga, pure rivers and beautiful white nights.

P5. As for me I like Moscow parks and squares.

T. Without doubt you are real patriots. Let’s speak about Norway and Edvard Grieg again.

Norway is famous for it’s notable people. One of them is the talented violinist
Ole Bull. Ones  in the summer of 1858 Ole Bull came on a visit to Alexander and Gesine Grieg. Edvard was asked to play for the world famous violinist. After he had heard Edvard’s own small compositions, Ole Bull became very serious and advised Ed to go to Leipzig to become an artist.

Edvard Grieg ended his education in Norway and went to the music conservatoire in Leipzig (Germany)., This conservatoire was founded in 1843 by Felix Mendelssohn. And it was the best and most modern conservatoire. The first time was a time with homesickness and language problems, but soon he started to feel at home. He had some of the best pedagogues in Europe, one of them was Moritz Hauptmann whom Edvard Grieg had the greatest respect for.

P. I can add. First of all Edvard Grieg studied the works of Mozart and Beethoven, but also the compositions of more modern composers like Shumann and Wagner. Edvard Grieg graduated from the conservatoire with  excellent  marks in 1862.

P2. Soon Grieg went to Copenhagen, the only Scandinavian city with a rich cultural life on an international level. The time in Denmark was a happy time for Edvard Grieg. He met  his future wife Nina Hagerup. Nina was an excellent pianist, but first of all it was her beautiful voice that fascinated Grieg. Grieg was so charmed by Nina, that they were secretly engaged in 1864.

T. Why were they engaged secretly?

The engagement was not well received by the two families. Grieg’s father warned his son against the commitments by starting a family. Nina’s mother’s criticism was much harsher. She said about her coming son-in-law: «He has nothing, he cannot do anything, and he makes music nobody cares to listen to».

T. Latin proverb: Amor vinzet omnia.

In spite of barriers in the spring of 1865 they made their engagement known. Certainly you heard about famous fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, but may be you don’t know that he wrote poems about love. Edvard Grieg  and Hans Christian Andersen were good friends. They wrote 4 songs together. Words were written  by Andersen. Music was written by Edvard Grieg .

Oleg, will you  be so kind. Recite it.

Ты думой дум моих отныне стала

Ты солнца луч, ты яркий светоч мой

Любви безмерность сердце вдруг познаю,

Люблю тебя и буду век с тобой.

Who could sing this wonderful romantic song? Can you guess?

P. It was Nina Hagerup and I know that she always sang his songs and very successfully.

T. It’s time to listen to Grieg’s music. It’s a suite from the play Peer Gynt.  What’s your opinion?

P.1. Edvard Grieg met Henric Ibsen for the first time in Rome in 1866. Ibsen immediately felt that Edvard Grieg was an artist with unusual musical and intellectual capacities. He asked Grieg to write music to his play Peer Gynt.

We want to suggest the plot of the play “Peer Gynt”.

Peer Gynt is the son of the once rich John Gynt who lost all his money, leaving Peer and his mother Ase to live in poverty. Peer wants to restore what his father has wrecked, but gets lost in boasting and day-dreams. He is involved in a fight and carries off the bride, Ingrid on her wedding-day. He is outlawed and has to flee from the parish.

P.2. Solveig whom  Peer met at the wedding and fell in love with, comes to his cabin in the forest, but he leaves her and goes on his travels. He is away for many years. Unfortunately he forgot about Solveig or may be almost forgot.  When he as an old  man comes back in Norway and reaches Solveig, who has been waiting for him during 40 years. She tells him that he has always been himself in her belief, hope and love.

1.               Подведение итогов урока.
